Alan Moore is a major figure in comics: his earliest published work dates to the late 1970s and his most iconic comic-book output came in the 1980s. Many of those works were adapted only in the 21st century, because Moore’s material can be challenging to translate to film.

The adaptations often differ from their sources, and Moore has largely distanced himself from them. Swamp Thing (1982) isn’t counted here, since Moore’s influential run on the character came after the movie. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) takes ingredients from Volume 1 but largely does its own thing.

The film is messy and uneven, with a few mildly entertaining sequences, and is more notable for behind-the-scenes turmoil — including prompting Sean Connery to retire from acting — than for faithfully capturing the comic’s sprawling story. Batman: The Killing Joke (2016) is the only animated feature based on Moore’s work and received a limited theatrical release.
