Goal reports Real Madrid are prepared to be patient with manager Xabi Alonso despite a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, a result that has intensified scrutiny of the former midfielder.

Alonso returned to the Bernabeu in summer 2025 after succeeding Carlo Ancelotti and had earlier ended a run of four straight losses to Barcelona with a Clasico win in October 2025. The Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia ended 3-2 to Barca — Vinicius Junior scored for Real — and the club have now lost five of their last six meetings with their rivals, amid a season of inconsistent results that included a run of two wins in eight between November 4 and December 10.

Jose Feliz Diaz reports for AS: “Despite the defeat against Barcelona, the manager’s job is not in danger. It’s a time for analysis and finding solutions to the team’s problems.” Real intend to work with Alonso, citing an injury crisis and a priority on improving the squad’s physical condition, and the team travel to Albacete for a Copa del Rey tie before returning home to face Levante and then Monaco in the Champions League.
