Red, the silent protagonist from the original games, returns as the final challenge in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal and their Gen 4 remakes. Standing alone at the summit of Mt. Silver, he opens the fight without warning, and his presence—both the sheer levels of his team and his stoic silence—has left a lasting impression on players.

Generation 2 broadened the series in several concrete ways: two new types (dark and steel), the Special stat split, held items, gender, breeding and a day/night cycle. It also added true endgame content; after beating the Elite Four you unlock Kanto and can re-challenge its gym leaders, eventually earning the Rock Climb TM from Prof.

Oak to reach Mt. Silver. The encounter itself is striking in its simplicity. Red starts with a Pikachu at level 81 (level 88 in the Gen 4 remakes), far beyond the roughly level-50 team a player typically fields when finishing the main story.
