Red Storm to Stop Making Games as Ubisoft Lays Off 105 Developers
Ubisoft is restructuring Red Storm Entertainment, the North Carolina studio founded by Tom Clancy, and the studio will no longer develop games. An internal announcement on March 19 made all of Red Storm’s game developers redundant, resulting in 105 layoffs. Red Storm will instead focus on IT and Snowdrop engine support for Ubisoft studios around the world.
Ubisoft described the change as part of a global cost‑savings plan. Laid-off employees will receive severance and career transition assistance, and the company still plans to develop more Tom Clancy games at other studios. The move follows 2025’s $1.25 billion Tencent bailout, which split parts of Ubisoft and its franchises into various studios still technically under the main company.
In the wake of that deal, Ubisoft has canceled multiple projects and laid off many developers. Founded in 1996, Red Storm built games based on Clancy’s books, including Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six; Ubisoft acquired the studio in 2000.
