Chelsea captain Reece James will miss several games after sustaining a fresh hamstring problem that is expected to keep him on the sidelines for an extended spell. He had been in contention for England's squad for the March internationals but will now undergo assessment and treatment.

James played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 loss to Newcastle and also completed the 5-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League first leg, yet he missed an open training session ahead of the second leg. The Athletic says the lay-off will be several weeks, while RMC Sport suggests it could be closer to two months.

Head coach Liam Rosenior said that James felt something in his hamstring against Newcastle and that scans are needed to find out the full extent. This marks the tenth different hamstring injury James has suffered since 2020, and he has missed 136 games in his career through injury and fitness issues.
