Reece James signs six-year Chelsea deal; English clubs struggle in Europe
Reece James has committed his future to Chelsea by signing a new six-year deal. The club captain’s previous contract expired in 2028 but he has agreed terms on an extension, removing the prospect of him leaving on a free transfer. The academy graduate, who previously battled fitness issues, has largely stayed injury free this season and is expected to be a key player for England at this summer’s World Cup.
It was a difficult week for English sides in Europe, with six Premier League teams failing to win in the Champions League. Arne Slot warned against drawing broad conclusions from a single gameday, citing the small sample size and the disadvantage of playing away, and said it would be premature to judge the league’s overall level.
Slot described Alisson’s problem as a “minor” muscle issue and said he hoped the goalkeeper would join training today and be available on Sunday; if not, Slot expected him to be ready for the visit of Galatasaray.
