Referee Christian Dingert admits mistake after controversial Bayern calls
Christian Dingert said he would not have sent off Luis Diaz after looking at the footage from Bayern’s 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen. Diaz had run into the penalty area after a lob from Harry Kane, and Leverkusen goalkeeper Jonas Blaswich made contact with his foot; Dingert initially judged it a dive and showed a second yellow.
"Looking at the footage now, I wouldn’t have given that decision," he told Sky, adding that during the game he had seen Diaz "take off his foot" and had not noticed the subsequent contact. Bayern reacted angrily. Captain Joshua Kimmich said, "I don’t want to argue for a penalty, but that’s definitely not a dive," while Vincent Kompany called the red card "madness" and demanded an explanation.
Jonathan Tah noted Diaz got straight up and "he’s not making a fuss, he’s not putting on a show." Dingert explained why VAR did not intervene: "In the case of a yellow-red card, it is currently not possible for VAR to intervene," a rule set to change in the summer.
