America has more than 5,000 public-use airports, yet roughly 30 of them handle over 70% of travelers. A recent paper from NASA and industry experts argues that those lesser-used local airports could become catalysts for changing how people and goods move across the country.

Called Regional Air Mobility (RAM), the concept would extend the convenience, speed, and safety of air travel to communities far from major hubs. The paper says targeted investments in RAM would complement other emerging aviation markets and accelerate transformation of the airspace.

Local airports could become gateways from the doorstep to the world, hubs for reliable local energy, and nodes for rapid access to commerce and critical supplies. The authors emphasize that RAM does not depend on miraculous new technology—the groundwork is already in place—and invite readers to download the full report to learn more.
