Resident Evil director won't confirm if Leon S. Kennedy is Italian or dating anyone
During a recent interview ahead of Resident Evil Requiem’s Feb. 27 launch, Polygon asked director Kōshi Nakanishi whether Leon S. Kennedy is Italian or has a girlfriend.
Nakanishi replied, "Unfortunately, I can't comment on Leon's private life. But just to let you know, I am also very interested in the answers to these questions," he said with a cheerful laugh.
The article notes there is little official information about Leon’s backstory before the 1998 Raccoon City incident; the franchise’s dedicated wiki describes him as Italian-American, apparently stemming from a Japan-only art book called Capcom Design Works.
Polygon reporter Giovanni Colantonio also dug into a fan theory that links elements of Leon’s lore to Jean Reno’s Italian gangster character in the 1994 film Léon: The Professional.
For now, Nakanishi’s comment leaves the questions open. Resident Evil Requiem launches Feb. 27 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and it remains unclear whether the game will provide any definitive answers about Leon’s heritage or private life.
