Resident Evil Requiem matches the movies' silly spectacle
Ahead of Resident Evil Requiem, the author revisited series lore and rewatched Resident Evil Death Island. That 2023 animated entry gathers the franchise’s major heroes to fight a zombie outbreak on Alcatraz, and its absurdity makes it a useful companion to Requiem.
The animated films have long run alongside the games. 2008’s Resident Evil: Degeneration kicked off the feature-film trend by following Resident Evil 4 and introducing plot elements later seen in Resident Evil 5. Those movies often staged outrageous action — an airplane crashing through an airport terminal, a monster parrying a slow-motion grenade-launcher shot amid a military shootout — pushing cinematic set pieces beyond what the games could depict at the time.
2017’s Resident Evil: Vendetta delivered an especially brazen gun-fu sequence, and by 2026 Requiem feels like it has closed much of that gap. Requiem leans on Capcom’s RE Engine for a joyfully preposterous Raccoon City motorcycle chase, as Leon and villain Dr.
