Resident Evil Requiem has done enough to start the Game of the Year conversation, but only just. Capcom’s series has been a steady presence at The Game Awards since its 2017 resurgence with Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, earning multiple nominations and wins, which made Requiem an early safe bet for a nomination.

Capcom split Requiem into two distinct experiences—first-person horror as Grace and third-person action as Leon—and critics often preferred one side over the other or found the tonal shifts jarring. The game’s technical polish, cinematic production values and its mournful engagement with personal and historical trauma all play in its favor with the awards jury.

By the numbers, Requiem sits at an 88 on Metacritic and an 89 on OpenCritic as of this writing.
