Revised Nintendo Switch 2 with removable battery could arrive in Europe first
A report in the Japanese outlet Nikkei says Nintendo is planning to modify the Switch 2 so consumers can more easily replace the battery, in order to comply with European Union legislation. No release date or list of countries has been announced, and Nikkei adds Nintendo could extend the change to Japan and the United States if consumer awareness of the right to repair grows.
Easier battery replacement would make the console simpler to repair and could cut costs for owners. Older hardware such as the 3DS had batteries removed by unscrewing a back plate, while the Switch 2’s battery is currently secured with strong adhesive and demands technical skill to remove.
Lithium-ion cells degrade over time, and although the Switch 2 has been on sale for just over nine months, removable batteries would let owners and third-party repair shops fix more devices and keep fewer units out of circulation.
