Ridley Scott's Flawless 1979 Sci-Fi Debut Screams Loud and Clear on Streaming
Ridley Scott began his career in television as a designer and director before moving into advertising. He gained prominence not for The Duellists but for his second film, which also marked his debut in science fiction and later became a critical and commercial hit.
Scott collaborated with Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett on the project they created together: Alien, released in 1979. The classic has enjoyed a revival on HBO Max, where it ranks ninth while its 2024 sequel, Alien: Romulus, tops the charts. Based on a story by Shusett and O'Bannon, Alien follows the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo.
Woken from cryo-sleep to investigate a distress call, the crew discovers a nest of eggs; an organism leaps from an egg, attaches to a crew member and triggers a terrifying chain of events. The cast includes Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto.
