Rio Ferdinand in hospital and using wheelchair during severe back pain
Rio Ferdinand has described the long-term physical cost of his playing career, saying chronic back pain can leave him unable to walk and, at times, dependent on hospital treatment and a wheelchair during severe flare-ups. He recalled being on tablets and injections for six years to continue playing, and said those measures have had lasting effects.
Since moving to Dubai he has begun seeing a physio and working closely with a personal trainer, adopting a more holistic approach aimed at preventing problems rather than only treating them when they arise. Despite the pain, Ferdinand maintains a rigorous routine.
He frames his commitment to the gym and to work as an example for his children and as something he needs for his own mental wellbeing, saying his kids should see a strong work ethic and a healthy lifestyle modelled. The family’s relocation to the Middle East is part of that change, which he called an "adventure" after years governed by the fixture list.
