A son of the late Zimbabwean president, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, 28, has been charged with attempted murder after a 23-year-old man was allegedly shot in the back on 19 February in an upmarket area of Johannesburg. Mugabe appeared in court on Monday alongside co-accused Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze.

Their lawyer, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, declined to comment and said he would request bail at the next hearing on 3 March. Prosecutors also accuse the two men of obstructing justice, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, immigration contraventions on suspicion of being in South Africa illegally, and theft.

Magaboke Mohlatlole, a national prosecuting authority spokesperson, said that after the alleged victim fell outside the gate one of the accused took the remote for the gate from him.
