Robot dogs are protecting data centers. Operators are seeing payoffs.
As companies pour billions into sprawling campuses for cloud and AI computing, robotics firms are pitching four-legged machines to patrol fences, inspect equipment, and spot problems before they cause outages. Boston Dynamics and Ghost Robotics are targeting data centers as a growing market, driven by the industry’s round-the-clock operations and large sites that can span dozens of acres.
Boston Dynamics’ Spot has drawn renewed interest from operators looking for more than perimeter patrol: industrial inspection, site mapping, and construction monitoring, in addition to spotting thermal anomalies, leaks, puddles, unusual sounds, or doors left open.
Spot’s price typically ranges from $175,000 to $300,000 depending on payloads, and Boston Dynamics says customers typically see a payoff within two years, often closer to 18 months of hard savings—excluding the value of the data collected.
