Roku's Backdrops feature, introduced in late 2024, can turn any Roku-connected TV or standalone Roku TV into a rotating art display or a single static image when the device is idle, giving a Frame TV–like appearance without buying a dedicated product. Backdrops shows curated artwork and photography from thousands of free images and also lets users upload personal photos or connect a Google Photos album.

The app appears on newer Roku OS versions; if it is not visible on the Home screen it can be added from Streaming Channels, and devices should be updated via Settings > System > System update to get the feature. Users can preview collections and individual works (with artist and title details), set a single image or a slideshow, and adjust Backdrops preferences such as image duration and start/stop times.

Roku suggests high-resolution JPG or PNG files that match or exceed the TV's resolution for best quality, and the app will automatically activate when the Roku is idle. Backdrops is free and does not require a subscription. To make the display look more like framed art, the source recommends lowering brightness and contrast, disabling motion smoothing, switching to a Picture or Movie mode in the TV's settings, or adding a physical frame and hiding cables.
