Roman Knit Pattern
From Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Spacecraft Systems Engineer, Missie Vess: the color work pattern for the Roman emblem, the Wide Field Instrument focal plane, as seen on figurine Nancy’s knitted blanket. The pattern can be used in scarves, hats, cowls, pot holders and other projects.
The sample on figurine Nancy’s blanket was knit on size 0 needles using a sock-weight yarn. You can scale up with larger needles and/or thicker gauge yarn, or by proportionally increasing the number of stitches and rows in the color pattern. Note that the number of stitches and number of rows for each detector are not equal; with this knitter’s tension more rows than stitches were needed to approximate a square.
Feel free to experiment to find what works for you. Figurine Nancy’s Blanket: Cast on 50 stitches. Rows 1 – 10: knit all stitches. Row 11: K all stitches (right side). Row 12: K5, P40, K5 (wrong side). Rows 13 – 44: Repeat Rows 11 and 12. Row 45: K10, Work Row 1 of color work pattern, K10.
