Roomette vs. bedroom on Amtrak's California Zephyr
The author rode Amtrak's California Zephyr twice: a 15-hour leg from Denver to Salt Lake City in January 2025 and the full 53-hour Chicago to Emeryville route in February 2026. The train is a double-decker Superliner that runs between Chicago and Emeryville and offers coach seating plus sleeper cars with roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, family-sized rooms, and accessible bedrooms.
For the shorter trip the author booked a $400 roomette; for the longer journey they paid $2,200 for a bedroom. The roomette measures about 23 square feet and has two seats facing each other with a fold-down table between them. The seats fold down into a lower bunk and a top bunk pulls down from the ceiling, but floor space is limited to the gap between the seats, and bathroom and shower facilities are shared with other sleeper passengers.
The bedroom is roughly 50 square feet, with a couch and a seat facing each other and a table between them; the couch folds into a cot that felt slightly wider than the roomette bunk.
