Ruben Amorim left Manchester United in January after 14 months in charge and is now being discussed as the leading candidate to take over at Benfica. Any appointment would be sensitive because of his deep ties to Sporting, their fierce local rivals. Amorim made his name in Portugal with Sporting and had won domestic titles with Braga and Sporting, but his reputation suffered following a difficult spell in England.

United slipped to 15th in the Premier League, lost the Europa League final to Tottenham and he was dismissed after a 1-1 draw with Leeds, yet he remains highly regarded in Portugal. Uncertainty around Jose Mourinho at the Estadio da Luz and Benfica’s position behind Sporting and FC Porto in the title race have fuelled talk of a change.

Journalist Luis Rocha Rodrigues has argued that, should Benfica move to a Plan B, they should try Amorim, saying: "If Benfica go to what I consider plan B... Benfica have to try Ruben Amorim...
