A top Russian general involved in intelligence gathering for the war in Ukraine was shot in the back inside an apartment building in north Moscow on Friday. Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev, deputy head of the G.R.U., was hospitalized after the attack; investigators said the assailant escaped and the general’s condition was not immediately clear.

The shooting came the morning after the head of the G.R.U., Igor Kostyukov, led the Russian delegation in talks with Ukraine in the United Arab Emirates. The talks yielded no apparent results, though both sides said they would return to the negotiating table. The attack continues a string of high-profile assaults and assassinations of senior Russian military officers in Moscow; Ukrainian officials, who claimed responsibility for some previous attacks, did not immediately respond to requests for comment about Alekseyev.

Pro-war military bloggers and pundits were quick to blame Ukraine and accused it of trying to derail the peace negotiations.
