Ryan Coogler is rebooting The X-Files for Hulu and has cast Danielle Deadwyler as a lead FBI agent. Coogler will write and direct the pilot, and Jennifer Yale has been hired as showrunner; Hulu has greenlit the pilot. The new series moves away from Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, centering on two agents who are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to unexplained phenomena and form an unlikely bond.

It remains unclear who will star opposite Deadwyler. Deadwyler has established herself with recent film work, including The Harder They Fall, the critically acclaimed Till—which earned her Best Actress nominations at the BAFTA Awards and Critics Choice Awards—and roles in Carry-On, 40 Acres, and The Woman in the Yard.

Other credits include Station Eleven, I Saw the TV Glow, The Piano Lesson, and the upcoming Steve Carell HBO comedy Rooster. There has been no confirmation that David Duchovny or Gillian Anderson will return; Anderson has said she has not had concrete conversations about the reboot and was unsure of the project's status.
