Three years after its announcement, Ryan Coogler's reboot of The X-Files is beginning to take shape. The original series, created by Chris Carter and starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, ran for nine seasons and became known for the tension between Mulder's belief in the paranormal and Scully's scientific skepticism.

Coogler has described the project as a labor of love. Chris Carter confirmed he will not be creatively involved in the reboot; he said he will act as a cheerleader and will serve as an executive producer. Coogler began work on the series in October 2025 and has spoken about wanting to deliver something genuinely frightening while honoring longtime fans.

Coogler says the new series will blend monster-of-the-week episodes with an underlying conspiracy. In February 2026 Danielle Deadwyler was cast as the female lead; she will not play Dana Scully but a new FBI agent who leads the X-Files unit.
