Ryan Gosling says he still holds a grudge over how The Nice Guys performed and puts much of the blame on The Angry Birds Movie. Both films opened in May 2016; The Nice Guys holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes while the animated film sits at 44%. Despite the critical edge, The Angry Birds Movie earned $352.3 million worldwide compared with The Nice Guys’ $62.8 million.

Gosling told Comicbook.com that so much of a sequel is decided by opening weekend and that The Nice Guys opened against Angry Birds. "So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us," he said. The Nice Guys made $11.2 million domestically in its opening weekend, while The Angry Birds Movie launched with $38.1 million.

Other competition that weekend included Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, which opened to $21.7 million, and Captain America: Civil War, which remained in theaters and finished the weekend with $32.9 million. All three targeted similar comedy audiences, so multiple factors affected The Nice Guys’ box office beyond the animated competitor.
