Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes make rare public appearance

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes made a surprise joint appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night. Mendes, 52, had been watching his interview from backstage and wasn’t expecting to join him; Gosling, 45, had organized the surprise for her birthday and asked audience members to sing to her.

A staff member brought Mendes onstage to her “sweetheart,” and Gosling quipped, “Here’s the thing, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.” Mendes, wearing his striped cardigan, wide-legged jeans and a John Lennon and Yoko Ono shirt, asked whether her segment would be “cut, right?” Fallon replied, “No!

It’s your birthday.” The surprise included a marching band performance of “Happy Birthday” and confetti. The pair planted kisses and held hands as Fallon closed the show. They last stepped out together at SXSW in 2015 and before that walked the red carpet for The Place Beyond the Pines in 2013; they met on the set of that drama and have been an item since.
