Saturday Night Live has built a reputation for iconic moments across its more than 50-year run, and Ryan Gosling's recent episode added a new milestone: Gorillaz became the first virtual band to headline the show. The band had already appeared in promos with Gosling, including one that featured their hit "Clint Eastwood" and a gag about the Five-Timers Club.

Gorillaz opened the musical segment with "Clint Eastwood," a song first released in 2001, as a thank-you to longtime fans, then performed "The Moon Cave" to promote their new album, The Mountain. Created in 1998 by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn, the band has long been known through its virtual members—2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, and Noodle—and this episode also marked Albarn's SNL debut; notably, Blur never appeared on the series.

Their appearance joins a list of memorable SNL musical moments that have shaped popular culture, from controversial performances to breakthrough sets.
