People reports that on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Jan. 5, Sadie Sink said she thinks Eleven died after sacrificing herself when the Upside Down was destroyed.

Sink, who played Max Mayfield in the series and is 23, told host Jimmy Fallon, “What do I think? I think she’s dead, I don't know,” and asked, “Is that a hot take or something?” Fallon said he agreed. In the episode, Mike tells the group he believes Eleven escaped, but Sink called that “just one last story” and “a coping thing,” adding, “I think it's stronger” that Eleven is dead.

Co-star Gaten Matarazzo told Deadline that it's fitting fans remain split and that viewers can leave Eleven’s fate to interpretation. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer told Netflix's Tudum they purposely left the ending ambiguous so characters could hold on to a happier story even if the show did not provide a clear answer. The Stranger Things finale is streaming now on Netflix.
