Sam Coffey: world-class signing who Man City want to make more unpredictable
Manchester City sit close to a first Women’s Super League title since 2016, built largely around the midfield pairing of Yui Hasegawa and Laura Blindkilde Brown. In January they added Sam Coffey, a United States international viewed as a world-class midfielder, paying a club-record fee to bolster an already strong group.
With Hasegawa away at the Asian Cup, Coffey has been given more game time to prepare for a bigger role; she has made one WSL start, an FA Cup start and four substitute appearances in the league so far. As an Olympic gold medallist and NWSL champion, she brings experience that could prove vital as City push to secure only their second-ever league crown.
Manager Andre Jeglertz says Coffey offers a different profile — more physical and more vocal — and he wants her to be able to play both as a deeper six and higher up the pitch to make the team less predictable.
