Sam Worthington is still chiefly associated with the Avatar series, but one of his most unheralded turns comes in the Australian miniseries Deadline Gallipoli, which he executive-produced and which is available to stream on The Roku Channel. Directed by Michael Rymer, the series follows four journalists — Philip Schuler (Worthington), Charles Bean (Joel Jackson), Keith Murdoch (Ewen Leslie) and Ellis Ashmead (Hugh Dancy) — who arrive at Gallipoli with Allied troops in 1915 during the campaign against the Ottoman Empire.

The story frames the conflict from a reporter’s perspective, showing how men obliged to file pro-Allied copy are driven by conscience to expose mismanagement. The drama avoids being a didactic plea for the Fourth Estate, instead leaning into political-thriller elements provided by its wartime setting.

Visual flourishes and grounded portraits of routine and extreme reporting give the series a cinematic feel; early, quieter episodes make the subsequent battlefield shocks more affecting.
