San Francisco teachers ended their strike early Friday, allowing public schools to reopen next week for about 50,000 students. Employees were set to return to campuses on Friday, but classes will not resume until Wednesday because closures were already planned for Friday and the district had holidays on Monday and Tuesday.

United Educators of San Francisco formed picket lines on Monday in the union’s first walkout since 1979. The union represents about 6,000 teachers, librarians, social workers and nurses in more than 100 schools and had pressed for fully paid medical premiums for members and dependents and a 9 percent raise over two years.

For four days, teachers wore red and rattled tambourines outside their schools. Just before sunrise on Friday the union and the district announced a tentative agreement that includes fully funded health care for employees and their families starting in 2027 and “meaningful relief” this year.
