Goal reports San Jose Earthquakes are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Germany and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to The Athletic.

Werner, who starred for Leipzig from 2016 to 2020, has found himself out of favour in his third stint with the club, making three Bundesliga appearances this year and registering 14 minutes on the pitch. Leipzig reportedly informed the striker he could leave permanently after an unsuccessful loan at Tottenham in 2025, but he was unable to agree a permanent exit last summer; his contract is said to be worth around €10m per year and runs out next June. The move would fill a Designated Player slot as San Jose rebuild under manager Bruce Arena.

The reported signing would seem to kick off a busy winter for the Quakes, who have one more DP spot available and are addressing several squad needs after losing a duo of stars. San Jose finished 10th in the West last season and missed a wildcard on a tiebreaker; they open their season against Sporting Kansas City on Feb. 21. A number of Western Conference clubs have also been active this offseason, with managerial changes at several teams and reigning regular-season champions San Diego expected to field a new-look side as star player Chucky Lozano is set to leave in the coming weeks.
