Sarah J. Maas Regains Screen Rights as Hulu’s ACOTAR Project Stalls
On a March 4, 2026 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Sarah J. Maas said she has regained the screen rights to all of her novels and is refocusing on writing. She told listeners her priority is the books and noted she wants greater oversight of any future adaptation.
Hulu first announced a TV adaptation in 2021 with Ronald D. Moore attached to develop the project. Moore later confirmed in July 2024 that he was no longer involved after leaving Disney/20th and returning to Sony and said he didn’t know the project’s status; he is now working on Prime Video’s God of War.
Maas’s recovery of the screen rights helps explain why the prospective A Court of Thrones and Roses series is effectively in limbo: without its original showrunner and with the author prioritizing new books, the development path has stalled. The next clear sign of movement would be a new showrunner or studio attachment and a platform confirmation, whether on Hulu or elsewhere.
