Sarah Michelle Gellar Blames Executive For Buffy Revival Cancellation
On March 14, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on Instagram that Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, a planned continuation of the original series to be produced by Hamnet director Chloé Zhao, had been cancelled. In a subsequent interview with People, she said an unnamed executive who was “proud” he had never watched the original had been a constant obstacle, and that she learned of the cancellation moments before attending the premiere of her film Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
Only one man appears among the nine credited executive producers: Kaz Kuzui. Kuzui served as a producer on the 1992 Buffy film and as an executive producer on the 1996 TV series, and he was involved in attempts to reboot the franchise as a film in 2009 and as another TV series in 2018.
The piece suggests that Kuzui’s long-standing involvement with Buffy makes him an unlikely candidate for the executive Gellar described.
