Tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates over the future of Yemen and an imminent declaration of an independent southern state have reached boiling point, with Riyadh effectively accusing Abu Dhabi of threatening its security. Observers warn the dispute could spark a civil war in southern Yemen and spill into other conflicts where the two Gulf states back opposing sides, including Sudan and the Horn of Africa.

The rivalry also touches on political influence, control of shipping lanes and commercial access. The UAE has long supported the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC). This month the STC seized Hadramaut and then al-Mahra, coming to control nearly all territory of the former South Yemen state, including its most productive oilfields.

Saudi forces recently bombed vehicles docking at the southern port of Mukalla; Riyadh said the vehicles had been sent for STC use and had come from an Emirati port, adding: “The kingdom stresses that any threat to its national security is a red line, and the kingdom will not hesitate to take all necessary steps and measures to confront and neutralise any such threat.” Riyadh has applied diplomatic pressure on Abu Dhabi and tried to isolate the UAE and the STC, warning that a southern breakaway would struggle for international recognition.
