The ten-part Saw franchise is headed to Netflix, but the 2021 offshoot Spiral will not be included. James Wan and Leigh Whannell launched the series in 2004 with a low-budget film set almost entirely in a filthy bathroom, in which two men wake chained to a pipe.

Tobin Bell established the role of John Kramer, the Jigsaw killer who built elaborate traps to force people to change. Kramer’s death in the third film shifted the series, which fluctuated in quality before concluding after the seventh entry. The franchise was unexpectedly revived in 2021 with Spiral, a spin-off that aimed to take the concept in a different direction.

Chris Rock brought a new angle to the material, placing Jigsaw-style traps against the backdrop of a corrupt Miami police force. In Spiral, Detective Zeke Banks (Rock) and rookie William Schenk (Max Minghella) investigate killings that echo Jigsaw’s methods, only to discover Zeke has a different connection to the crimes than people assume.
