Scarpetta review – Nicole Kidman show a dire mess with an AI chatbot
Scarpetta has been a long time in the making: Demi Moore and Angelina Jolie were attached in earlier decades, and the author even approached Jodie Foster and Helen Mirren. It has finally reached screens with Nicole Kidman in the title role and Jamie Lee Curtis both executive producing and appearing as one of its stars.
After such a wait, it is a shame the series is so dire—a boilerplate mess that strips the original work and applies a cynical techy spin. The show forces in two timelines for little reason. In the present Kidman plays Virginia’s chief medical officer Kay Scarpetta, called to a crime scene where a woman’s naked body—sans hands—has been bound with rope.
Flashbacks follow a young Scarpetta (Rosy McEwen) in the 90s tracking a similar killer who leaves a glittery residue.
