Antonin Kinsky's last game for Tottenham had been in October, a 2-0 League Cup defeat to Newcastle. Almost six months later the Czech goalkeeper made a surprise return in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Atlético Madrid, but the match unravelled quickly: Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez left him rattled and Atlético led 3-0 after just a quarter of an hour.

Two minutes after the third goal Kinsky was substituted in tears and replaced by Guglielmo Vicario, who had not missed a game since that 29th of October in the League Cup.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel criticised Tottenham boss Tudor for withdrawing Kinsky after 17 minutes, saying on CBS Sports: "When his name is mentioned in the future, the whole football world will remember this moment. He needed to be supported, at least until half-time. Tudor has completely destroyed his career. I feel really sorry for him..."
