Schmigadoon: Apple TV’s Musical Series Has No Bad Episodes
Apple TV’s Schmigadoon emerged as a rare musical television success, earning a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score. Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the series pairs a smart script and inventive soundtrack with strong performances from Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key.
The premise sends two struggling doctors, Josh Skinner (Key) and Melissa Gimble (Strong), through a mysterious bridge into a town trapped in a 1940s‑style musical. As Melissa and Josh navigate cheerful, singing residents and surreal theatrical tropes, they must find true love before they can leave.
Rather than lampooning Broadway, the show reverently riffs on its conventions. Paul’s songs pay homage to Golden Age classics in Season 1 and to ’60s and ’70s hits in Season 2’s “Schmicago,” while Christopher Gattelli’s production design, costumes, and choreography bring the musical world to life.
