Time and data firm Statista have for the first time created a methodology to measure the world’s most sustainable companies for 2024 and have produced a ranked list led by Schneider Electric. The methodology weights public, trackable commitments and performance, including alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative’s 1.5°C goal, high scores from CDP, Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022 (the most recent years fully reported), and the share of renewable energy used in operations.

The assessment also favours companies that embed sustainability into their business models. Schneider Electric, based in France, topped the list and is noted for energy-management software and services, a target of carbon neutrality by 2025, a Sustainability Business that helps customers cut emissions, a program to track its own sustainability impact and reductions across its supply chain, and a CDP climate score of “A” for 12 years running; “We’ve positioned the company to be an impact company,” CEO Peter W.

Herweck said on a recent earnings call. Other high-ranking firms include Moncler, which ranked third after recycling more than 80% of its nylon scraps in 2023 and using 100% renewable energy at its directly managed sites, and Illumina, fifth, which debuted a more powerful gene sequencer while cutting packaging waste by 90% from its previous model.
