V premiered on Nov. 3, 2009 as a remake of Kenneth Johnson's 1983 miniseries. The story centers on a technologically advanced alien species that arrives claiming to come in peace and offering help in exchange for a small amount of Earth’s resources. The Visitors are soon exposed as reptilian humanoids wearing synthetic skin intent on total takeover, and a band of freedom fighters led in part by FBI agent Erica Evans rises to oppose them.

The cast included Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Logan Huffman and Scott Wolf. The 2009 series put a modern spin on the original’s allegory. Its leader, Anna (Baccarin), acts as a shrewd PR strategist who manipulates the media, using ideas like Universal Health Care and Blue Energy as smokescreens for authoritarian aims.

A "Peace Ambassador" program recruits teens and young adults to spy on friends and neighbors—Erica Evans’s son Tyler becomes a member—echoing social-media influencers and propaganda that urges people to report on others.
