Anas Sarwar, leader of the Scottish Labour party, on Monday urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to stand down, intensifying pressure over Mr. Starmer’s role in appointing Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States despite Mandelson’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

"I have to be honest about failing wherever I see it," Mr. Sarwar said in Glasgow, adding, "There have been too many mistakes." Sarwar, the most senior figure in the Labour movement yet to call for Mr. Starmer’s resignation, said the turmoil in Downing Street had become a "huge distraction" and denied he was part of any plan to oust the prime minister.

Mr. Mandelson was fired from his U.S. diplomatic post in September after new information about his contacts with Mr. Epstein, and thousands of additional emails released on Jan. 30 suggested a closer friendship and that Mandelson passed confidential, market-sensitive information to Epstein in 2009.
