Scream 7's reception suggests the series should take a break
When Wes Craven's Scream arrived in 1996 it reshaped horror and launched a new slasher wave, spawning two sequels and several imitators. The series faltered with Scream 3 in 2000 and then took a long pause before Craven returned with Scream 4 in 2011; that fourth film, while flawed, tried to update the franchise for a connected world, but plans for a new trilogy were shelved after weak box office returns and Craven's death in 2015.
Radio Silence revived Ghostface in 2022 with two well-received entries, yet repetition and a nostalgia-first approach started to show. Scream 5 and Scream 6 delivered effective kills and notable performances from newcomers, but both films struggled to offer anything new on repeat viewings, trading enduring surprises for familiar beats and predictable reveals.
Scream 7 arrived amid cast and crew departures and controversy, with Melissa Barrera fired and Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon leaving the project.
