Scream 8 in Early Development Following Scream 7's Release
Scream 7 has finally hit theaters, arriving to mark the 30th anniversary of the original film that introduced Ghostface, Sidney Prescott and the line "what's your favorite scary movie?". The six previous entries have grossed $912 million worldwide, making the series the ninth-highest-grossing horror franchise.
The seventh film faced a long road to release, delayed nearly three years after the studio fired Melissa Barrera and abandoned the storyline set up by the 2022 and 2023 entries; Neve Campbell's return and teasers of previously dead characters played by Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley and David Arquette helped renew fan interest.
Plans for Scream 8 entered early development, Variety reported on Feb. 25, 2026, though Paramount, Skydance and Spyglass have not made an official announcement. Paramount may aim for a 2027 release—Deadline noted an untitled horror date of July 16, 2027 that could be reserved—and a quick turnaround would follow the franchise's history.
