Scream IV Identified the Rise of Influencer Culture
Scream began as a tongue-in-cheek horror film that helped establish Wes Craven as a major voice in the genre. Starring Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, the 1996 original spawned an influential trilogy and later returned under original writer Kevin Williamson.
The franchise has since continued, but recent entries have struggled: the most recent film sits at 31% on Rotten Tomatoes and was followed by controversy after Melissa Barrera’s firing. Craven’s last Scream film, Scream IV, was divisive yet served as a clear send-off.
It brought familiar faces back—Campbell and Courteney Cox among them—and introduced Emma Roberts as Sidney’s cousin Jill. Sidney returns to Westboro to promote her memoir about the Ghostface killings, only to face a new string of murders. This installment modernized the story by incorporating advanced technology and viral culture: Ghostface livestreams the killings, turning horror into an online spectacle.
