Not all horror remakes fail, and MTV and Dimension Television’s Scream: The TV Series is a notable example. Released in 2015, four years after Scream 4 closed the original film series, the show avoids directly referencing the films while still following the slasher subgenre’s rules.

Its focus on relatable characters, a relentless villain and a string of twists helped it stand out. The series opens with a teenager’s brutal death after a cyberbullying incident, then follows police investigations as Emma Duval and her friends become targets. The killer appears fixated on Emma’s past and her mother, and may be closer than she realizes.

Season 2 continues Emma’s story as a survivor when a new killer emerges, echoing sequel beats similar to those in Scream 2. After two seasons the show was rebranded as Scream: Resurrection, but that revival had no connection to previous episodes.
