Sam Lloyd spent the first nine seasons of Scrubs as Theodore "Ted" Buckland, making 95 appearances as the beleaguered hospital lawyer. He died in April 2020 after being diagnosed with a brain tumor and metastatic lung cancer. The role was not recast, and the character was laid to rest on the show.

John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes, both returning for the revival, spoke about how central Lloyd was to the series' tenor. McGinley praised Lloyd's "eternal flop sweat" and called him, in effect, a "very skilled silent film actor," able to pair sharp language with physical comedy that turned simple gestures into "roaring laughter." Reyes fondly recalled waiting for "when he and his quartet broke into song," savoring the harmonies and melodies those moments brought.

Cast and crew say Lloyd's presence remains an important influence as the show returns. Zach Braff has said the revival will pay tribute by having the Sacred Heart crew begin visiting a new bar called Lloyd's Tavern. The first two episodes of Season 10 will debut on ABC on Feb.
