Frederick Forsyth’s The Day of the Jackal was one of the novels that inspired Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books, and that lineage has helped fuel renewed interest in the spy thriller form.

Peacock adapted Forsyth’s story into a series starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch. The show debuted to widespread critical acclaim and was quickly renewed for a second season.

Critic Jeff Ewing called the series a “tense and well-crafted update of a spy thriller,” noting it “fits nicely into very contemporary conversations around global inequality and the lack of financial transparency that facilitates it,” and that it builds tension as the cat-and-mouse hunt between Bianca and the Jackal reaches a crescendo.

Fifteen months after arriving on Peacock, Season 2 is now in production. The series, which involves Sky Atlantic and creators including director Brian Kirk and writer Ronan Bennett, has been winning over fans of classic spy fare despite differences in plot and pacing.
