SEC chair says crypto market structure bill likely to reach Trump this year
US Securities and Exchange Commission chair Paul Atkins said he is confident the crypto market structure bill will make it onto President Donald Trump’s desk this year. In an interview with Fox Business, Atkins praised the passing of the GENIUS Act in 2025 for providing regulatory clarity and described the bipartisan market structure bill as the next key boost for the domestic crypto sector.
He said the bill "fits in with the president’s focus on making America the crypto capital of the world," adding the SEC is "behind it" and "very bullish on the effects of the bill getting to the president to be signed this year." On X, Atkins said the government should "bring crypto asset markets out of the regulatory gray zone" and that passing bipartisan market structure legislation would help "future-proof against rogue regulators." The Senate Agriculture Committee has pushed back the final markup of the bill to the end of January to allow more time to finalize details and garner support; it had initially slated a markup for Thursday to coincide with a separate Senate Banking Committee markup that will still go ahead.
One factor that may affect timing is a potential government shutdown if the House fails to pass a set of government spending bills by Jan. 30.
