Secretary Rubio Gives Up Role as Acting U.S. Archivist
Nytimes reports that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stepped away from his acting role as the United States archivist, leaving the National Archives without Senate-confirmed leadership. He had been the acting head of the agency since early 2025 after President Trump fired its previous chief, Colleen J.
Shogan. The agency said Mr. Rubio ended his time at the National Archives to comply with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, which limits such temporary appointments to 300 days, and that he "delegated" his authority to James Byron, the senior adviser to the archivist.
