According to Goal, Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0 at St James' Park in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final as new signing Antoine Semenyo scored and substitute Rayan Cherki added a late second.

Semenyo, signed for £65m, scored for the second game running and became the first City player since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009 to score in his first two matches for the club, with his opener coming against the run of play after Newcastle hit the woodwork twice early in the second half. City had no shots in the first half for only the second time this season, but they controlled the second half — Jeremy Doku led the counter that set up Semenyo, and Cherki finished a move created by substitute Rayan Ait-Nouri.

City finished the night with a two-goal advantage ahead of the second leg back in Manchester next month, with Pep Guardiola praised in the report for navigating an injury crisis and using an unconventional midfield solution during the win.
